An important activity in “off page” search engine optimisation is link gathering but it is not only the number of links but equally important is the quality of these links. Below are two major factors in the determination of the quality.
Link Popularity and Link Reputation
Link popularity, in a general sense, is determined by the number and quality of sites which link to a particular site..
In theory, good sites, with quality content, will naturally attract many links and conversely, content poor sites will have fewer links, if any.
Most search engines use link popularity as a factor in determining the ranking of a site.
The effects of link popularity:
- links to your site give Web users ways to find it while visiting other sites.
- links to your site give search engine robots trails to follow to find and index or re-index it.
- links to your site are essentially votes for your site, in search engine ranking algorithms, but not all votes are counted equally.
Link Reputation
The term, link reputation, refers to how closely keyword phrases in your anchor links match the text on the page, another name for it might be relevance.
Search engines are looking to produce results with the greatest relevance for the searcher. Therefore, the relevance of the backlinks i.e the determination of the connection between keyword phrases and the actual text information in a particular page, is very important. When dealing with a specific search query or theme, the search engines complex algorithms determine the relevance. The greater the determined relevance, the more importance it has for the search engine, which in turn influences your search engine rankings.
